FAQS: Wisdom Teeth Health

How can I tell if my wisdom teeth are coming in?
Wisdom teeth will typically try to erupt into the mouth between the ages of 17 and 23.  If your wisdom teeth are coming in you will most likely feel some discomfort and experience swelling in the immediate area.  As the teeth break skin, minor bleeding usually occurs.  If your wisdom teeth are coming in, visiting a dentist to evaluate the alignment of these teeth is important.

Do wisdom teeth really need to be pulled out?
Visit your dentist to determine if you have the proper amount of space to accommodate these teeth.  If there is limited space for these teeth it will be recommended they be removed.  Improperly positioned wisdom teeth can lead to damage of the adjacent teeth including severe decay and periodontal (gum and bone) disease.  Removing these teeth at an early age provides for easier removal with faster healing.

Can dentists at Lincoln Avenue Dental Group remove wisdom teeth?
Our dentists are very experienced with tooth removals and are capable of removing wisdom teeth.  If the removal appears to be more complicated due to the position of the tooth in the jaw or if you are interested in deep sedation or general anesthesia during the procedure, we can refer you to a specialist of dentistry called an oral surgeon.  They are able to handle more complicated tooth removals, including impacted wisdom teeth.  They are also able to provide general anesthesia, if needed, for patient comfort.
